Vehicle Budget Calculator: Price Range from a Monthly Payment

Start with the monthly payment you're comfortable with. Add your APR, loan term, down payment, and trade-in equity, and we'll estimate the vehicle price range that payment could cover.

What vehicle price range might fit my target monthly payment?
Your price range depends on four things: the payment, the APR, the loan term, and the money you bring to the deal (cash down plus trade-in equity). The calculator works backward from your payment to an estimated loan amount, adds your down payment and trade equity, and can subtract estimated tax and fees. The result is an estimate for planning, not a loan approval or an offer.

Estimate Your Vehicle Price Range

Enter whole dollars. Fields marked "optional" can be left blank.

Use a rate you've been quoted if you have one. Your actual APR depends on credit approval.
Trade-in value minus any loan payoff. Enter a negative number if you owe more than the vehicle is worth.
Checking this lowers the price estimate so tax and fees fit inside your budget.
Massachusetts motor vehicle sales tax is 6.25%. Used only when the box above is checked.
For example, documentation, title, and registration fees. Used only when the box above is checked.

Important: This calculator provides estimates for planning only. It is not a credit approval, loan offer, or guarantee of terms. Actual APR, term, and amount financed depend on lender approval and your credit profile. When tax and fees are included, the calculator applies the tax rate to the full vehicle price and does not reduce tax for a trade-in, so the estimate is conservative. Taxes, fees, incentives, and vehicle prices change; confirm all figures with our finance team before you buy.

How the Calculator Works

Step 1: Payment to loan amount

Using your APR and term, the calculator finds the largest loan your payment would repay in full by the end of the term. At 0% APR, that's simply the payment times the number of months.

Step 2: Add what you bring

Your cash down payment and trade-in equity are added to the loan amount. Negative equity (owing more than your trade is worth) is subtracted, because it gets rolled into the new loan.

Step 3: Set aside tax and fees (optional)

If you check the tax-and-fees box, the calculator subtracts your fees and divides by one plus the tax rate, so the vehicle price, tax, and fees all fit inside your budget.

Why it shows a range

The top of the range uses the APR you entered. The bottom uses an APR one percentage point higher, a cushion in case your approved rate comes in above your estimate.

Before You Set a Payment Target

Look past the payment

A longer term lowers the payment but usually increases total interest. See our guide to how APR and loan term affect your cost.

Budget for ownership

Insurance, fuel, maintenance, and Massachusetts excise tax aren't part of your loan payment, but they're part of what the vehicle costs each month.

Know your trade value

Trade-in equity can move your price range noticeably. Get an estimate with our Kelley Blue Book trade-in tool.

Vehicle Budget Calculator FAQ

How much car can I afford with a $500 monthly payment?

It depends on your APR, term, and down payment. For example, at a hypothetical 7% APR over 60 months with nothing down, $500 a month repays a loan of about $25,250. Enter your own numbers above for an estimate that fits your situation.

Is the result a loan approval?

No. The calculator is an estimating tool only. Your actual rate and loan amount depend on lender approval.

Why does a longer term raise my price range?

Spreading payments over more months lets the same payment repay a larger loan. The tradeoff is that you'll usually pay more total interest, and you may owe more than the vehicle is worth for longer.

How does negative equity affect my budget?

If you owe more on your current vehicle than it's worth, that difference is typically added to your new loan. Enter it as a negative trade-in equity amount, and the calculator lowers your price range to match.

Should I include tax and fees?

If you plan to finance tax and fees, yes. Checking the box gives a more realistic price range because part of your loan goes to those costs instead of the vehicle.
