Advertised Car Price vs. Total Cost in MA | Mazda Cape Cod

Understanding Advertised Vehicle Prices and Total Purchase Costs

The price on a vehicle listing is where your cost starts, not where it ends. Here's what Massachusetts law and our own disclosures add to an advertised price, and how to get a vehicle-specific breakdown before you buy.

What can make the total purchase cost different from a vehicle's advertised price?
In Massachusetts, your total usually includes the advertised price plus 6.25% state sales tax, RMV registration and title fees, and the dealer documentation fee. If you finance, finance charges add to what you pay over the life of the loan. A trade-in can lower the amount that's taxed, and optional products you choose to add will raise the total. For an exact figure, ask for an itemized quote on the specific vehicle.

What Our Advertised Prices Include and Exclude

Our pre-owned inventory listings carry this disclosure, current as of October 2026:

"The advertised price does not include sales tax, vehicle registration fees, other fees required by law, finance charges and a $594 documentation fee and a $5 title fee."

Listings also note that images, prices, and options are subject to availability, incentive offerings, current pricing, and credit worthiness. Always confirm availability and vehicle details with our team before you buy. You can see the current disclosure on our pre-owned inventory page.

Cost Components Between the Advertised Price and Your Total

Use this table to understand each line you may see on a purchase quote. We don't estimate totals here, because tax and fees depend on the final sale price, any trade-in, and your registration details.

A Closer Look at Each Cost

Sales tax and your trade-in

Massachusetts charges 6.25% sales tax on vehicle purchases. When you trade in a vehicle to a Massachusetts dealer as part of the purchase, the Department of Revenue taxes only the difference between the sale price and the trade-in allowance, as long as tax was paid on (or the purchaser was exempt from tax on) the traded vehicle.

The tax is the same whether you pay cash or finance. Want to know what your current vehicle might be worth? Get an estimate with our Kelley Blue Book trade-in tool.

Documentation fee

Massachusetts law permits dealers to charge a documentation preparation fee. It covers the work of preparing, processing, and filing the paperwork each sale requires, from title and lien filings to state and federal disclosures. Learn more on our documentation preparation page.

Registration and title

The RMV charges a $75 certificate of title fee, and registration fees vary by plate type, with a standard passenger registration at $60. Dealers typically handle the title and registration paperwork for you as part of the sale.

Finance charges

Financing changes what you pay over time, not the vehicle's price. Your APR, loan term, and down payment all affect total interest. Our guide to how APR and loan term affect your cost explains the tradeoffs.

Costs that come after the purchase

Massachusetts also bills an annual motor vehicle excise tax through your city or town for each registered vehicle. It isn't part of your purchase price, but it's worth planning for in your first-year budget.

How to Compare Listings Fairly

Read each disclosure

Check what every listing includes and excludes. Two dealers' advertised prices aren't directly comparable if one includes fees and the other doesn't.

Ask for an itemized quote

Request a written breakdown showing the sale price, tax, registration, title, documentation fee, and any products you've chosen.

Confirm the vehicle first

Make sure the specific vehicle is still available before you travel. Contact our team to confirm availability and current pricing first.

Advertised Price FAQ

What fees are added to a used car price in Massachusetts?

Expect 6.25% state sales tax, RMV registration and title fees, and any dealer fees disclosed with the listing. Our pre-owned listings exclude sales tax, registration fees, other fees required by law, finance charges, a $594 documentation fee, and a $5 title fee.

Does a trade-in reduce sales tax in Massachusetts?

Usually, yes. When you trade a vehicle in to a Massachusetts dealer as part of a purchase, sales tax applies to the difference between the sale price and the trade-in allowance, provided tax was paid on (or the purchaser was exempt from tax on) the traded vehicle.

Is the documentation fee required by the state?

No. It's a dealer fee that Massachusetts law permits dealers to charge for preparing and processing sale documents. We disclose ours on our inventory listings.

Can you tell me my out-the-door price online?

Yes. Contact us with the vehicle you're interested in and we'll provide an itemized breakdown based on current pricing and your details, such as trade-in and registration type.

Does financing change the price of the vehicle?

No. Financing doesn't change the sale price or sales tax, but finance charges add to the total you pay over the loan. A longer term or higher APR generally increases total interest.
